This Privacy Policy explains how the GeneFox app (“GeneFox,” the “app”) handles information. GeneFox is developed and published by Vindhya Data Science (“we,” “us,” or “our”). It applies to the GeneFox apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Android.
GeneFox lets you browse and visualize gene-expression and related genomic data from public research repositories — for example TCGA cohorts through the NIH Genomic Data Commons, and public datasets from NCBI’s Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO). To do this, the app sends scientific identifiers and search terms (such as gene symbols and dataset accession numbers) to those public services and displays the results. These requests are made directly from your device to the data providers.
GeneFox does not collect, request, or transmit:
The app also does not use Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics, Firebase Cloud Messaging, or any comparable analytics/tracking service. GeneFox does not display ads.
To function, GeneFox sends a limited amount of information from your device to the services below. Except where you type free text (search boxes and the AI assistant), this is limited to scientific identifiers (gene symbols, dataset accession numbers, and public sample identifiers) that are not tied to your identity. All connections use encrypted HTTPS.
When you search, browse, or open a dataset, the app queries public research resources operated by third parties, including:
api.gdc.cancer.goveutils.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov (U.S. National Institutes of Health)*.xenahubs.net, xena.treehouse.gi.ucsc.eduwww.ebi.ac.uk, ftp.ebi.ac.ukmaayanlab.cloudWhat is sent to these services is limited to the scientific query itself — for example a gene symbol, a dataset accession, a sample barcode, or, in the GEO search box, the text you type as a search term. No account identifier, device identifier, or personal information is attached to these requests.
Because a free-text search term is transmitted to NCBI, please do not enter personal or confidential information into search fields.
GeneFox includes an optional natural-language assistant, “Ask GeneFox.” It first tries to interpret your question on your device. For harder questions it can, only with your explicit consent, send the question to Google’s Gemini model through Firebase AI Logic (a Google service) to interpret it.
To ensure that only the genuine, unmodified GeneFox app can use the AI service above, the app uses Firebase App Check with Apple’s App Attest (on iPhone, iPad, and Mac) and Google Play Integrity (on Android). These send a cryptographic app-and-device integrity token to Google to confirm the request comes from a legitimate copy of the app. These tokens verify the app, not you; they do not contain personal information and are not used to identify or track you.
GeneFox does not send you marketing or push notifications and does not register your device for a push-notification token.
The third parties GeneFox connects to process information under their own privacy policies:
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these independent services.
All network connections made by GeneFox use encrypted HTTPS/TLS. Because GeneFox does not operate a backend that stores your data, there is no central store of personal information to be breached.
GeneFox is a scientific reference tool intended for researchers, clinicians, students, and other adults. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because the app collects no personal information from any user, it does not knowingly collect any from children under 13 (or the equivalent age in your jurisdiction).
The public data providers and Google services described above are operated primarily in the United States, so information sent to them (scientific identifiers and, if applicable, your typed query) is processed in the United States and other countries where those providers operate.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA). Because GeneFox does not collect personal information and we hold no personal data about you, there is generally no personal data for us to access, correct, delete, or export. Data stored on your device is under your control (clear it in-app or uninstall the app); iCloud-synced bookmarks are managed through your Apple account. If you have questions about your rights, contact us using the details below.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and post the new version at the same location. Material changes will also be reflected in the app’s store listing.
